All of us look forward to nurture our children in safer homes but are your homes stocked with these chemicals? Are you nurturing your children with these chemicals, some classify as hazardous waste? These chemicals are commonly found in household cleaners.

Formaldehyde – “…in view of its widespread use, toxicity, and volatility, exposure to formaldehyde is a significant consideration for human health.”

Phosphates – “…which make clothes appear whiter (it is these that show up under ultraviolet light)…”

Ammonia – “Although in wide use, ammonia is both caustic and hazardous.”

Chlorine bleach – “Most bleaches are hazardous if ingested or inhaled, and should be used with care.”

Abrasives – small particles that rub away the top surface and expose to the element. Causes wear and tear at a faster rate.

Aerosol propellants – “… is a suspension of fine solid particles or liquid droplets in a gas. Examples are smoke, oceanic haze, air pollution, smog… There are two main areas of health concern linked to aerosol cans: – 1) Deliberate inhalation of the contents to gain a high from the propellant. 2) The piggy-backing of more dangerous particles into the respiratory tracts…”

Other harsh ingredients – caustic in nature, active ingredients

When we buy grocery, we look at the labels. Likewise, when you purchase household cleaners, do also look at the labels. Look out for those household cleaners that had harsh chemicals.

What are the tell-tales signs that your daily cleaners had these harsh chemicals? What can these harsh chemicals do? Some will do the cleaning that you need and all will have harmful fumes during and after use.

As product labeling are required by law, depending on where you purchase the cleaning products. Look at the few samples of labels below. Are these labels familiar to you? Further more, the labels are always in small letters and one had to search and look hard for it.

Use only in well-ventilated area.

When used indoor, always open windows to allow ventilation.

Do not use in confines areas.

Avoid direct contact with product.

Keep out of reach to children.

Avoid excessive inhalation.

In many homes today, you can find these chemicals starting from your kitchen to your bathrooms to your garage.

Many of us stored these cleaners under the sink, whether in kitchen or bathroom, most chemicals escape out of the containers, mixing together which became toxic fumes, right under the sink, usually in enclosed area.

The kitchen is the place to prepare your meals and imagine preparing your meals for your family enveloped by toxic fumes?

How about the bathroom? Most bathrooms have smaller ventilation and are high up. Imagine getting these toxic fumes for half an hour everyday?

The garage is the next place of content. Most garages are enclosed and garages are places where most grimes, dirt and dust gather.

Dust, dirt, spillage and smudges on walls, on floors or on furniture are a fact of life. Whether at home or at work, most cleaners used are harsh in nature and a concern for health, especially for the young ones, i.e. the children.

Moreover, these cleaners which you can find right in your kitchen, bathrooms and garage uses harsh chemicals which when use, also damage fabrics and surfaces, causing faster wear and tear.

What about the environment we are setting for our future generation?

As we know that the water we use are recycled by nature. Whatever we let off into drains, the water eventually turned up in our water supply.

Imagine all the chemical-laden cleaners you are using now? Do you see the chemicals residing in our water supply? Care to do our bit now?

That eventually has an impact on our family and their future.
